Five Beach Cities

The “Five Cities” moniker refers to a collection of coastal communities southwest of San Luis Obispo. Which five is subject to some debate, but we believe it to be Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, Avila Beach, and Oceano. In an effort to be inclusive, we’ll also include Arroyo Grande and maybe a recommendation or two from Nipomo, Guadalupe, or Santa Maria.

BEACHES

The first thing you need to do in the five beach cities is, well, go to the beach! Although all unique in their own ways, the beach cities can be grouped into three distinct areas or vibes:

Avila Beach
Avila Beach is a laid-back destination full of wellness and beautiful views. It’s the perfect spot to relax with a spa trip or a yoga class. It’s also a destination so picturesque that many couples have their weddings in Avila.

Pismo & Shell Beach
Pismo and Shell Beaches are most concentrated and busiest of the areas. In addition to their spectacular ocean views and access points, they feature the largest number of dining and shopping options.

Pismo beach is most known for its iconic pier and promenade which are great for fishing, meandering, and taking photographs. There are also two large public parks - Dinosaur Caves Park & Spyglass Park - to get lost in and take in the gorgeous coastal sights.

Grover Beach & Oceano
If you’re looking for somewhere to camp and/or have a fire on the beach, look no farther than Grover Beach and Oceano. The Oceano Dunes SVRA allows cars and ATVs to drive right on the sand and you can dig your own pit for a fire.

FOOD & DRINK

Admittedly we don’t eat out a ton in any of these areas so we’re a little light on full meal recommendations. Instead, we have are a few very specific things that we love:

OTHER ATTRACTIONS/ACTIVITIES

The Five Cities area is packed with things to do, especially for anyone that likes to be outdoors. In addition to the beaches, you can venture out to the Monarch Butterfly Grove, rent a bike to ride on the City to the Sea Trail, or explore the sea caves via kayak at Margo Dodd Park.. Or if you’re in the mood for a man-made adventure, you might want to check out Mustang Water Park, Vista Lago Adventure Park, or the AG Swinging Bridge.

There are things to do if you don’t want to be inside too! The Pismo Premium Outlets and Central Coast Aquarium are two very different options to get out of the sun and enjoy yourself in the Five Cities.

Lastly, if you’re looking to relax, you should check out the Avila Hot Springs. Here you can soak in the mineral pools or schedule a massage.
